Chinese medical herbs for chemotherapy side effects in
colorectal cancer patients
Chinese herbal medicines are widely used to counteract the side-effects
of chemotherapy in patients being treated for cancer. As yet, there is
no clear evidence that herbal medicines are effective in this role. We
have performed a systematic review of the potential benefits of Chinese
herbal medicines in patients being treated with chemotherapy for
colorectal cancer. We identified four relevant studies, which included
a total of 342 patients, with adequately reported data. We conclude
that, from the limited information available, there is some evidence of
benefit from decoctions of
Huangqi compounds. Compared with patients treated by
chemotherapy alone, patients treated with chemotherapy and Huangqi
decoctions were less likely to experience nausea and vomiting or low
white cell counts. There was some evidence to suggest that the
decoctions also stimulated cells of the immune system, but did not
affect the levels of antibodies in the blood. We could find no evidence
of harm arising from the use of Huangqi decoctions. Our results suggest
that further, larger-scale, trials of the use of Huangqi decoctions in
the prevention of chemotherapy-related side-effects are needed.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of Kangaibao oral
liquid(KABOL),
a Chinese herbal preparation in treating malignant turmor of middle or
advanced stage. METHODS: A comparative study was done by observing the
effect of 103 patients treated with KABOL,
and another 90 patients treated with chemotherapy in the same period
were taken as a control group for comparison. RESULTS: The immunologic
function, short-term effective rate (complete relieved rate and partial
relieved rate), survival quality, 1-, 2- and 3-year survival rate,
median suvival time, and the CEA declining rate of the KABOL group were
significantly higher than those of the control group. CONCLUSIONS: KABOL has
the effects of inhibiting tumor growth, prolonging the survival time
and improving the quality of survival of tumor patient.

Xiansu voor de bijwerkingen van een chemokuur bij een maagtumor te verminderen.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect and mechanism of composite Xiansu Capsule
(CXSC) combined with chemotherapy in treating gastric carcinoma of
mid-late stage. METHODS: The 61 patients of the test group were treated
by CXSC combined with chemotherapy and 30 patients of the control group
treated with chemotherapy alone. The effect of treatment and cell
mediated immunity of patients were observed. RESULTS: The effective
rate of the test group and the control group was 32.8% and 13.3%
respectively (P < 0.05), the chemotherapy caused toxic reaction
occurrence was less in the former than that in the latter group (P
< 0.01). The CD3 level of patients in the test group was
decreased, and CD4/CD8 level was raised obviously, which suggested that
CXSC had immuno-regulating effect on T-cells. CONCLUSION: CXSC could
enhance the efficacy and reduce the toxic side-effect of chemotherapy.
To regulate the cell mediated immunity of patients is possibly its
mechanism.
